Growing for 75 Years

At Bruce Nurseries, we’ve been growing since 1945 which means 2020 marks our 75th anniversary. We couldn’t let this milestone go by unnoticed, we wanted to offer a short history of the nursery and what it means to us.

William and Audrey Bruce

William and Audrey Bruce established Bruce Nurseries in 1945 when they opened their garden center along Ferndale Avenue in Johnstown Pennsylvania.

They later purchased the farm near Davidsville, PA,  a small town nestled in the mountains of Somerset County, to cultivated their business.

Their son, Dave Bruce grew up in the nursery business and upon graduating from college in 1976, he joined the family business full-time.

Dave focused on transforming the business into a wholesale/retail business. Over the next decade or so, he expanded the field grown balled and burlapped operation and started growing in containers. All the while, working alongside a dedicated workforce to meticulously maintain the nursery.
